Program Requirements

There are three different majors in the Chinese Studies program. The Chinese Studies (Single-Language Focus) major focuses solely on the Chinese language, whereas the Chinese Studies (Dual-Language Focus with Chinese either as the primary or secondary language) majors allow students to combine that with the study of another language. All languages in the departments of Language and Culture Studies and Classical Studies can count towards the Dual-Language Focus.

  1. Chinese Studies (Single-Language Focus) majors are required to have 10 credits in Chinese Studies beyond CHIN 101.

  2. Chinese Studies (Dual-Language Focus with Chinese as the primary language):  7 credits in Chinese Studies beyond CHIN 101

  3. Chinese Studies (Dual-Language Focus with Chinese as the secondary language):  4 credits in Chinese Studies beyond CHIN 101

1) Chinese Studies (Single-Language Focus): 10 credits beyond CHIN 101

Four required core courses: 

  • INTS-CHIN 237: 20th-century Chinese Literature and Films

  • CHIN 329: Chinese Business Culture

  • CHIN 411: US-China Relations in Mandarin

  • CHIN 497: Senior Thesis.

Four semesters of Chinese language courses taken at Trinity, with the highest level of language course taken at Trinity no lower than CHIN 302.

Two electives:

  • Can include any Chinese language courses not counted towards the required four semesters;

  • May be taken in English in another discipline (beyond the 100 level), focusing on topics related to the sinophone world. These courses may be found, for example, in such departments or programs as History, Fine Arts, International Studies, Anthropology, Philosophy, Political Science, the other sections of the Language and Culture Studies department, the program in Women, Gender and Sexuality, or the equivalents of such offerings in any approved study-away program.

  • A maximum of 2 credits may be transferred from an approved study-away program.

2) Chinese Studies (Dual-Language Focus with Chinese as the primary language): 7 credits in Chinese Studies beyond CHIN 101

Three required core courses:

  • INTS-CHIN 237: 20th-century Chinese Literature and Films

  • Either of the following two courses

    • CHIN 329: Chinese Business Culture

    • CHIN 411: US-China Relations in Mandarin

  • CHIN 497: Senior Thesis

 Three semesters of Chinese language courses taken at Trinity, with the highest level of language course taken at Trinity no lower than CHIN 302.

 One elective:

  • Can include any Chinese language courses not counted towards the required three semesters, and any core course beyond the required three.

  •  May be taken in English in another discipline (beyond the 100 level), focusing on topics related to the sinophone world. These courses may be found, for example, in such departments or programs as History, Fine Arts, International Studies, Anthropology, Philosophy, Political Science, the other sections of the Language and Culture Studies department, the program in Women, Gender and Sexuality, or the equivalents of such offerings in any approved study-away program.

  • A maximum of 2 credits may be transferred from an approved study-away program.

3) Chinese Studies (Dual-Language Focus with Chinese as the secondary language): 4 credits in Chinese Studies beyond CHIN 101 

  • Two required core courses

    • INTS-CHIN 237: 20th-century Chinese Literature and Films

  • Either of the following two courses

    • CHIN 329: Chinese Business Culture

    • CHIN 411: US-China Relations in Mandarin

Two semesters of Chinese language courses taken at Trinity, with the highest level of language course taken at Trinity no lower than CHIN 301.

  • A maximum of 1 credit may be transferred from an approved study-away program.

Capstone/senior project: The Writing Intensive Part II requirement for Chinese Studies (Single-Language Focus) majors and Chinese Studies (Dual-Language Focus with Chinese as the primary language) majors is fulfilled by CHIN 497. Senior Thesis. This course culminates in a 15-20 page research paper. Students double-majoring in Chinese Studies and another discipline are encouraged to combine research interests.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Study away: All majors are encouraged to study away in an approved program in some part of the sinophone world. Students must communicate with their advisor in advance to ensure that courses taken during study away will receive transfer credit, if applicable.

Honors: Students qualifying for honors in their Chinese studies majors must attain a cumulative average of A- or better in all courses counting toward the major, and attain A-in CHIN497 or the primary language concentration’s 401/497.
