Organ Performance - Experiential Certificate

Department(s)

Description

This experiential certificate prepares students for graduate study and/or careers in organ performance through the development of technical and musical skills, knowledge of the organ in its historical context, and pre-professional experience. Students complete two semesters of MUSC-107 (Lessons in Organ, 0.5 credit/semester), including a performance in each end-of-semester’s department recital. Students enroll in MUSC-328 (Organ Literature and History), studying the development of the instrument and its repertoire from antiquity to the present. The certificate is rounded out with a co-curricular experience working during one program year as an “organ scholar” (or similar title) under professional mentorship/supervision at a religious institution with a substantial music program in the Greater Hartford region (including such work at Trinity College Chapel). In such a role, a student is expected to gain experience performing solo repertoire; accompanying choral music, hymnody, and other liturgical music; and a broad knowledge of sacred music and its functions. Potential positions must be arranged in consultation with and approval of the college organist.
